Er:YAG vs CO2 Laser Resurfacing in Northville MI

If you've been researching laser resurfacing for acne scars or deep lines, you've probably run into two names — Er:YAG and CO2 — and a lot of vague language about how one is "gentler" and the other is "more powerful." That's not wrong, exactly. It's just not an explanation, and it doesn't help you decide.
Here in Northville, Michigan, the question I get most often isn't which laser is better. It's some version of how long will I look like something happened to me? And the honest answer to that depends almost entirely on one number that nobody puts on a website: the wavelength.
I trained as an electrical engineer before I trained in skin. So let me show you the actual reason these two lasers behave so differently — and why it determines your recovery, your risk, and whether resurfacing is right for your skin tone.
Both lasers target the same thing: water
Ablative resurfacing works by removing the outer layer of skin in a controlled way so your body rebuilds it. New collagen, new surface, scars and lines that don't come back the same.
Both Er:YAG and CO2 do this by heating the water inside your skin until it vaporizes, which ejects the tissue. Your skin is mostly water, so water is the target.
The difference is how strongly each wavelength gets absorbed by that water.
The number that changes everything
Er:YAG emits at 2,940 nanometers. That wavelength sits almost exactly on top of water's peak absorption in the infrared spectrum — the point where water soaks up light more efficiently than at any other laser wavelength.
CO2 emits at 10,600 nanometers. Water absorbs that too, but roughly fifteen times less strongly.
Here's why that matters. Weaker absorption means the light travels further before it's used up. So the same energy gets spread through a thicker layer of tissue:
Er:YAG deposits its energy in a layer about one micron deep — a fraction of a single skin cell
CO2 spreads that same energy across roughly twelve microns
Same laser energy. Very different volume of tissue heated. That single fact drives everything else.
What that means for your recovery
The tissue that gets heated but not removed is called the residual thermal damage zone. It's the part your body has to repair.
Er:YAG typically leaves somewhere around 5 to 20 microns of it. CO2 leaves 50 to 150.
So when someone tells you Er:YAG resurfacing heals faster, that's not marketing. There is genuinely less damaged tissue to clear and rebuild. Ablative laser resurfacing downtime with Er:YAG usually runs three to fourteen days depending on the depth we choose. Traditional CO2 resurfacing often runs considerably longer.

Skin tone, and why the wavelength matters again
Heat is what provokes pigment cells to overreact. That reaction — post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — is the main risk of any resurfacing treatment on Fitzpatrick IV, V, and VI skin.
Less residual heat means less reaction. That's the physical reason Er:YAG carries lower PIH risk than CO2 on deeper skin tones, and it's a large part of why we chose the Aerolase Era for our Northville practice.
But I want to be clear about the limit of that claim. Lower risk is not no risk. Removing skin creates inflammation no matter which laser does it. If you're Fitzpatrick IV or above and you want resurfacing, we start conservative, we may pre-treat your skin for several weeks first, and we space treatments further apart. That's a protocol, not a disclaimer.
The trade-off nobody advertises
Here's the part that gets left out of most comparisons: CO2's wide thermal zone isn't purely a downside.
Sustained heating across a volume of dermis is what causes collagen to contract. That's where skin tightening comes from. CO2 does that well. Er:YAG, with its narrow heat margin, largely doesn't.
So if your concern is acne scars, texture, or etched lines, Er:YAG resurfaces beautifully with a far easier recovery. If your primary concern is laxity — skin that's loosening rather than scarred or lined — resurfacing isn't the right tool at all, and we'll tell you that instead of selling you a treatment.
Why the timing matters in Michigan
Healing skin is highly sun-sensitive, and Michigan summers make protection difficult. October through March is the right window for any ablative work here. We see it every year — clients who resurface in fall hold their results better than clients who resurface in June.

Frequently asked questions
Is Er:YAG or CO2 better for acne scars? Both improve indented acne scarring. Er:YAG gets there with meaningfully less downtime, which is why we use it. Severe or ice-pick scarring sometimes needs a combined approach, and we'll tell you honestly at your assessment whether one treatment will be enough.
How long is the downtime for Er:YAG resurfacing? Between 1 and 14 days, depending on the depth. A superficial treatment leaves you pink for a day. A deep treatment means roughly a week of visible peeling and another week of pinkness.
Is laser resurfacing safe for dark skin? Er:YAG is safer on Fitzpatrick IV–VI than CO2 or IPL because it targets water rather than pigment. It still isn't risk-free. We use a modified protocol — conservative depth, possible pre-treatment, longer intervals — and we'll walk you through exactly what that means before you decide.
Will laser resurfacing tighten my skin? Not primarily. Er:YAG excels at texture, scarring, and lines. If laxity is your main concern, that's a different conversation — and possibly a different treatment.
Can I get laser resurfacing in the summer? You can, but we'd steer you toward October through March. Healing skin burns easily, and results hold better when you're not heading into a season of sun exposure.
